The Yoga Dome
What does geodesic mean anyway?
The Latin root of the word means ‘earth’ + ‘divide’. In mathematics it relates to the geometry of curved spaces and indicates the shortest straight line between two points on a sphere. A geodesic dome is a sphere-like construction with a framework of lightweight bars forming a network of self-supporting and self-balancing triangular structures and requiring the minimal use of materials. At the Chettinad, it means that you get to do yoga in an amazing ethereal space!
The dome rests on the highest point of the property with a view of the surrounding countryside and valley below. During early morning practice, the expansive bay window frames the sun rising over the distant hills. Diaphanous apex-to-floor curtains can be drawn to mute direct sunlight, and the dome is equipped with air-conditioning, a ventilation fan, and heating in the cooler months. For those who like music to accompany their practice, our bluetooth-capable sound system can be paired with your devices.
The dome’s hardwood floors were recovered from an old building and lovingly restored by the owner’s hands (and many hours on knees!) and the antique wood armario stocks high-quality yoga mats and props in sufficient quantities for retreat groups.
If you were wondering if a geodesic dome needs special care, here are some tips that we share with our retreat guests.
